For most people, especially teenagers, appearance is getting more important. It is directly linked to self-esteem. Access to social media platforms is why youngsters are more concerned about their appearances. Although social media platforms have many merits, it does not apply to every generation.
The social media platforms have significantly increased the fear of being judged. Teenagers spend time by keep thinking about what everyone will think if in upload an image, if write this comment if they share this post. Becoming accepted by peers is more important than self-acceptance. Sticking to the norm on social media is very much necessary.
So yes, social media platforms have changed how our personality is judged. Our profile picture depicts our personality traits. We cannot change it. As of now, it is the reality, it might be changed in the future.
Especially celebrities have impacted the significant change by valuing social followings as their value. Which is also a natural process. But we cannot avoid that celebrities have given tough competition to ordinary people, as both of the parties are on the same platforms. The daily routines of an ordinary person and a celebrity are entirely different. So unrealistic expectations get created and celebrities and influencers are the ones who are followed.
So, we can conclude that nothing is getting normal. Maintaining a slim body, and perfect skin with a 50 kg weight, etc. are quite unrealistic goals that this generation is valuing. We should realize that appearances don’t last, there are much more meaningful things to think about
